Retinol Skin Products – My Top Choices

Spread the love

Retinol has to be the absolute best anti ageing skincare product available on the market today with the exception of SPF of course. It has over 700 hundred scientific studies supporting its efficacy of retinol skincare products in reducing fine lines and wrinkles, reducing pore size and appearance and boosting collagen production. It even treats acne, it really does do it all!

How does it work

Have you noticed children have round bouncy cheeks and as you get older your face shape changes, that roundness slims out and the bounciness goes, skin does look as fresh as when your a child it looks more dull, this is due to a reduction in collagen production and a slow down in cellular turnover.

The average skin cycle is 21-28 days when we get older this slows right down to as long as 60 days!

Collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid within our skin also slows down its production explaining why our skin starts to look less youthful and starts to show signs of ageing such as lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores, dehydration, uneven skin texture and tone, loss of elasticity and sagging.

The great news is that retinol works on all these things. It increases our cellular turnover and boosts our collagen production.

By speeding up our cellular turnover it pushes branded new skin cells up to the surface much more rapidly forcing the skin to naturally exfoliate the older surface ones, this will reduce age spots and other pigmentation and wrinkles in as little as 6-8 weeks.

What is Retinol

Retinol derives from vitamin A and there are different types of retinol products on the market.

It may be worth having a little understanding when thinking about your product choices. Most skincare products will either contain pure retinol or retinol palmitate.

When we use a product from the retinoid family it is converted into retinoic acid within the skin which then cause a biological response, this includes increased cell production and new collagen synthesis.

It will take more steps for the skin to convert retinol palmitate to retinoic acid than pure retinol meaning a higher concentration is needed to create the same biological effect.

Retinol  which derives from Vitamin A  is very sensitive to UV and if in the presence of it, will begin to breakdown so it’s important you only wear your retinol at nighttime.

As your going to have brand new skin from using your retinol it will be more sensitive to the sun so its important that you protect it with a high factor broad spectrum SPF. Factor 30 or above.

If you find your skin is reacting to it all that is happening is your new cells are coming to the surface too quickly before they are ready, just slow it down a little and use it every 3rd night for a few days, then alternate nights and then back to every night once your skin adjusts.

Always make sure you give your skin a good cleanse the following morning before applying your SPF.

Retinol is even great for acne skin, by increasing the cellular turnover it unclogs the pores and reduces the pore size resulting in fewer pimples. It will also help reduce the appearance of acne scaring over time too.

Skinceuticals Retinol 0.3%

Another great one is skinceutcals Retinol 0.3%

Now you may think this is not as powerful as the MD Advanced but this is a pure retinol where’s as MD advanced is a Retinol palmatate product which is why it needs to be stronger. A pure retinol converts to retinoic acid within the skin much more easily.

This is ideal for anyone who is new to retinol. Skinceuticals are one of the best brands for offering quality clinically proven skincare.
