Is Too Much Screen Time Ageing Your Skin? – Protect From Blue Light

Are our screens damaging and ageing our skin

With Facebook, Instagram, twitter and tick-tock consuming so much of our everyday lives not to mention all the other hours we spend at our screens working, what would you think if I was to tell you that screen time is having a detrimental effect on your skin!

Is too much screen time ageing ?

Some studies have shown the screens from our phones, tablets, TV’s, and laptops are exposing our skin to a high energy visible (HEV) light, just a single dose of this HEV light is the equivalent of 2 and a half hours of sunlight on a sunny day, it has been suggested using your devises outside can double the impact on your skin as you are getting the harmful effects from the sun aswell as your device.

This HEV light causes changes to occur within our cells which results in free radical production. These free radicals are destroying your collagen and elastin leading to premature ageing, fine lines and wrinkles, sagging skin, pigmentation and age spots!

Our collagen and elastin is important to give our skin it youthful bounce and elasticity and we have it in abundance when we are young. Once we hit our twenties our natural levels slowly start to decline but can be further destroyed by our lifestyle choices, so protecting it is vital to prevent early signs of ageing especially if you don’t want to see those pesky lines and wrinkles making an early appearance before their time.

Aswell as the sun containing harmful UV rays, it also emits high energy visible light of which can easily penetrate through our windows further the-sun-a-big-factor-in-ageingcontributing to the same damaging effect on your skin. Damaging free radicals are produced destroying our collagen and elastin leading to visible ageing effects.

Free radicals contribute to every skin condition from ageing to acne. These  free radicals erode our skin cell walls and DNA which can lead to lack of collagen, hyper pigmentation and sensitivity.

So what can you do

Keep screen time to a minimum but if it’s essential to use your device then make sure you are using skincare with great ingredients to protect against these harmful aggressors.

These are essential when protecting your skin against environmental pollutants, free radicals from the sun and the damaging effects of the high energy light produced from your devices.

Antioxidants neutralize the free radicals produced therefore preventing the harmful and damaging effects.

Look for ingredients like vitamins C in the form of L-Ascorbic acid and Resveratrol as they also help repair damaged cells and prevent further damage.

Use a mineral SPF

To protect your skin against oxidative stress from free radicals from harmful UV and HEV produced by the sun, you can use good mineral SPF. Remember UVA and HEV penetrate glass so you should always wear sunscreen even when indoors.

Here’s what I recommend⠀

Antioxidants: Vitamin C is the master antioxidant in our body. It is highly effective at neutralizing free radicals leading to a brighter, more luminous complexion. It can also support ageing skin by protecting your collagen.

So when our phones, tablets and laptops are such a huge part of our lives, we want to ensure we are keeping our skin healthy and protecting it daily. Yes our devices may be emitting potentially damaging HEV light and adding to the visible signs of ageing and any new fine lines or wrinkles that have recently presented themselves they may have been a contributing factor but the good news is we can definitely prevent and protect our skin from further damage by using a good skincare regime with the appropriate antioxidants and sunscreens.
